The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73) will open on 18 September 2018 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The theme of the general debate will be, ‘Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.’
The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, 25 September 2018, and is scheduled to last for nine working days. The agenda of the session includes a number of international and regional issues, including sustainable development, maintaining international peace and security, political conflicts, peacekeeping and peace building.
Egypt is participating in the session in the presence of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, carrying an agenda full of important international, regional and national issues. He will explain Egypt's achievements in fighting terrorism, results of the Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018 and Egypt's vision of developments in the Middle East, especially in Palestine, Syria and Libya.
The Middle East issues come on top of Egypt's priorities including the Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis, situation in Libya and Yemen, combating terrorism, development in Africa, respect of international law and the protection of human rights as well as the topics of peacekeeping and peace-building.
It is expected that President Sisi to meet his American counterpart Donald Trump in New York on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations Assembly. The two leaders are expected to discuss and exchange views on regional and international issues of common concern; especially on the Palestinian cause. The discussions aimed at reaching a comprehensive political settlement which would be based on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with international legitimacy.
Sisi is also expected to participate in the celebration, which will be held on the sidelines of the UN general Assembly, with the centennial of the late African leader Nelson Mandela, for his place and sacrifices as a symbol of the continent's symbols, especially as Egypt will head the African Union in January.
President Sisi arrived in New York to attend the 73rd United Nations General Assembly meetings.
