During the opening session, the former Prime Minister of Belgium Yves Leterme said, “This symposium is aimed at strengthening efforts and bringing viewpoints closer together. It also hopes to consolidate some of the values shared by the three religions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism in the form of communicating as well as rejecting violence and wrong ideologies.”

Also speaking in the opening session was Rexhep Meidani, the former President of Albania and he said, “This symposium is very important not only for the Middle East but for Europe as well, since it works towards integration and peaceful coexistence between communities.” Meidani added, “There are two realities when dealing with immigrants; assimilation and integration. Assimilation creates a sense of isolation which feeds extremism as well as unemployment and discrimination. Not to mention division, which generates social discrimination.”
