32nd session of AU Summit

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived on Saturday 9/2/2019 on a historic visit to Ethiopia during which he attends the African Union (AU) summit and receives the presidency of the AU for the year 2019, followed by his chairmanship of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the AU Heads of State and Government.

The main topic of this year's summit, that kicks off on Sunday 10/2/2019, is refugees and internally displaced in Africa.

The African leaders also discuss means of fighting terrorism and establishing peace and security in the African countries.

Egypt's presidency of the AU since its establishment in 2002 to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU), crowns sustained efforts exerted by Egypt, under the leadership of President Sisi, to promote ties with African countries.

It also reflects Egypt's restoration of its crucial role in Africa as one of the founding countries of the OAU in 1963 in Addis Ababa.

The summit held under the theme: "Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa", the theme of the summit was chosen to keep abreast of the increase in the number of migrants and refugees and human trafficking.

The summit focuses on a host of important topics, topped by the African Union Agenda 2063 and progress made in ratifying the African Continental Free Trade Area that was signed by 44 out of 55 AU member states in Kigali, Rwanda on March 21, 2018.

The summit also discusses achieving "African regional integration", in addition to a host of issues related to climate change, education, innovation, health and technology localization.

It is also mull genuine efforts to settle conflicts in Africa, as well as steps taken to implement "Silencing the guns in Africa by 2020" initiative.

The 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union kicked off in Addis Ababa with the participation of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, where Egypt handed over the chairmanship of the African Union. More

In his speech after having been handed over the chairmanship of the AU, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said Egypt will exert utmost efforts to continue with the institutional, structural and financial reform of the African Union and seek to develop tools and potentials of the continental bloc and the African Union Commission to meet the aspirations and hopes of the African peoples.
