Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean for Water and Environment Miguel García-Herraiz has lauded Egypt's efforts in the field of pollution control and environment protection.

He highlighted Egypt's mega development projects in the fields of renewable energy, smart villages and upgrading lakes and modern farming using advanced technologies.

In statements to MENA on the sidelines the celebrations held by the Union to mark the World Environment Day which falls on June 5, García-Herraiz focused on fighting all sources of air pollution which he considered as one of the most dangerous ecological threats in the world.

García-Herraiz praised Benban Solar Park project in Aswan which won the best-project annual award by the World Bank Group, saying that it is considered the largest solar power installation in the world to be established in Egypt with investments amounting to $ 2 billion and total capacity of 1,465 megawatts.

Benban solar venture represents a step that will help increase the renewable energy contribution in Egypt to 20% by 2022 and 42% in 2035 according to a report issued by the International Renewable Energy Agency, García-Herraiz said.

He also commended Egypt's approach in building several smart cities including the New Administrative Capital which he expects to be a model for smart cities in the Mediterranean region and the whole world.

He lauded Egypt's efforts to upgrade the country's lakes and remove encroachment on them to get rid of all sources of pollution at them.

Such projects serve the UN Millennium Development Goals which are sought to be achieved by the Union in cooperation with the international community.
