Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb said several local and international initiatives were launched to end violence and combat extremism in Africa and the world, including the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together signed with Pope Francis of the Vatican in February.
During his meeting with a delegation of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) on Monday 9/12/2019, Tayyeb noted the Islamic institution contributes to spreading peaceful co-existence in Africa and raising awareness about the dangers of terrorism and extremism through its relief missions and peace convoys, in addition to its scholarships.
The grand imam pointed out Al Azhar is home to more than 5,000 African students.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of APRM Panel of Eminent Persons Ibrahim Gambari hoped that Al Azhar would support the mechanism because of its great role in fighting terrorism in Africa.
