Alfred Farag

Alfred Farag is one of the most important Arab playwrights in the twentieth century. Born in Al-Sharqiya governorate in 1929, Farag obtained his bachelor degree in arts from Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University in 1949. Farag’s plays seriously discussed justice, freedom, social solidarity, national identity, and search for truth, besides calling for creating an effective and strong will inside anyone to be able to change and renew things.
Alfred Farag adored theater while he was young; he was a member in the acting team of the school. He also composed poems and practiced drawing.
After graduation, he worked as a journalist and literary critic in Rosa el-Yousif magazine, Tahrir magazine and Al-Gomhuria newspaper. From 1964 to 1966, he paid a special heed to theater where he wrote a number of plays that really affected the theater movement in Egypt. He worked as a counselor of Theater, Music and Folklore Authority in Egypt.
His works included:
1- Baghdad Barber (Hallaa’ Baghdad), 1964.
2- Suleiman Al-Halabi, 1965.
3- Al-Zeir Salim, 1966.
4- Ala Genah el-Tabreezi wa tabiu’ahu quffa, 1969.
5- Directory of the smart spectator to theater- study- 1969.
Alfred Farag died on December 4, 2005.
