Egyptian actor Gamil Rateb, an icon of the Egyptian cinema, theatre and television, which enriched by many wonderful works.

He was born on 28 November, 1926 in Cairo, Egypt. his full name is Gamil Abubakr Rateb. He graduated from the School of French Law, and continued his university education in France.

The first movie appearance was in 1946 through the movie (I Am The East), and then returned to France again to continue the art work in the cinema, and then returned to Egypt again in mid the 1970s, and played leading roles in various Egyptian movies namely; El-Soud Ela El-Hawia, Hob Fi El-Zinzana, Al Baree', Al-Bidaya, El-Keif, Birds of the Dark, Ala mn Notlik Al-Rosas, Sanawat al khatar and many others.

Gamil Rateb presented nearly seven French films and three Tunisian films, which was French-Egyptian joint production. He also participated in the American film 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'A CLOUD IN A GLASS OF WATER', 2011.

He is best known internationally for his performance as Majid in the acclaimed 1962 movie “Lawrence of Arabia,” opposite Peter O’Toole.

Gamil Rateb died on Wednesday, 19 September, 2018, at the age of 92.

The Honors:

- On 6/11/2016, Tunisian President honored Gamil Rateb and awarded him the first category of the National Medal of Merit in the Culture Sector at Carthage Film Festival.

- On 5/11/2015, Culture Minister Helmi Al-Namnam honored him at the Hanager theater at the Egyptian Opera House.

- In 2011, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Dubai International Film Festival.
