Launched by SIS… Rashwan: A Global Platform in 3 Tongues to Counter Misconceptions of Human Rights

In Arabic, English and French, the State Information Service (SIS) launched an electronic platform for a comprehensive local, regional and international database on all issues related to "human rights".
Head of the Syndicate of Journalists and Chairman of SIS,Diaa Rashwan said: “The purpose of this platform, which is updated round-the-clock, is to establish the correct concepts and the comprehensive real content of human rights; including their economic, social, cultural and political dimensions. Moreover, it explains the legal, cultural and global foundations and implementation of this updated concept in order to counter the attempts of politicization, falsified vicious campaigns that achieve political objectives or suspicious agendas under the pretext of fabricated human rights slogans.
Rashwan pointed out that the new platform http://hrstudies.sis.gov.eg has been named "Studies in Human Rights", the same title of the quarterly academic periodical issued by SIS and concerned with spreading the culture of human rights on a sound basis. He noted that this platform is a flurry of a broad media activity undertaken by the SIS, being an official Egyptian media body to achieve the State's goals in promoting and disseminating the culture of human rights, in addition the specialized human rights unit established by SIS.
Rashwan stated: “The new tri-language platform includes ten sections updated round-the-clock; salient of which is that of “documents”. It brings out the original and translated texts of international, regional and local documents, among which the fundamental International human rights conventions Egypt acceded to; such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICRMW), the Convention for the Protection of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the four Geneva Conventions and the Additional Protocols thereto, the Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, and other human rights conventions. Additionally, it overviews the declarations; topped by the most significant human rights historic document; i.e. the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam and the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together ratified by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb and Pope of Vatican Francis last year.
SIS Chairman added that a whole section will be dedicated to present a comprehensive review of Egyptian legislations on human rights, on top of which comes the Egyptian Constitution that was adopted in 2014, not to mention dozens of laws and legislations that provide genuine guarantees to ensure full protection of human rights in Egypt in conformity with the highest international standards in terms of both texts and application.
In addition, another section will focus on the role of institutions working in the field of human rights as follows: first, Egyptian councils such as the National Council for Human Rights, the National Council for Women, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood and the National Council for Disability Affairs; second, specialized regional and international councils such as the UN Human Rights Council; third, national committees such as the National Coordinating Committee on Preventing and Combating Illegal Immigration and the National Coordinating Committee for Combating Human Trafficking; fourth, regional commissions such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and fifth, international commissions such as human rights treaty bodies.
Rashwan also highlighted that a special section will provide a complete compilation of all official statements on human rights, including all official statements released by the State Information Service on issues related to human rights in Egypt, all local statements and national official reports on human rights in addition to all international ones.
In light of the paramount importance attached to the social dimension of human rights especially of the vulnerable and underprivileged categories that truly deserve the State’s due attention, a special section of the new platform will shed light on all issues related to those categories, namely addressing the needs of people with disabilities, empowering women, paying due attention to children and providing the utmost care to low-income brackets. Furthermore, based on constantly updated statistics and data, this section will provide a close follow-up of all legislations enacted, procedures taken and practical initiatives adopted to safeguard the rights of all vulnerable categories.
SIS Chairman added that another section will provide a comprehensive compilation of studies and relevant reports on all issues and topics pertinent to human rights that will be reviewed on solid scientific bases, while another section will cover all local, regional and international conferences on human rights as well as all seminars, workshops and panels held in the same vein.
The new platform, as Rashwan pinpointed, will contain a news section that will provide a constantly updated flow of local, regional and international news on human rights, while another section will be dedicated to op-eds.
Furthermore, one of the new platform sections will stand as a library on human rights, thus providing a thorough collection of the most distinguished Arab and foreign books on human rights in addition to providing a special collection of master's and doctoral theses as well as scientific periodicals concerned both at home and abroad. In the same vein, this section will include an agenda that will review the main events related to human rights and update them chronologically.
Rashwan stressed that the new platform will be rendered an objective source of information for researchers and readers both at home and abroad, adding that a group of the SIS staffers shouldered the responsibility of creating the new platform, preparing the relevant content in addition to translating and updating the selected materials to be uploaded to the different sections of the new platform. The platform editor-in-chief is Mr. Abdelmoeti Abuzaid, the head of the SIS Foreign Information Sector, its managing editor is Dr. Ghada Helmy Ahmed while a distinguished group of the SIS cadres from different departments handle different tasks, based on their specializations.
