Infographic: increasing churches numbers in Egypt

Continuing the efforts exerted by Egypt  in legalizing the status of churches in order to consolidate the values and principles of citizenship and freedom of worship and equality among all Egyptians, the Cabinet’s Media Center published on 'Sunday' 22/9/2019 an infographic highlighting the latest number of legalized churches.


This legalization was made by a committee of churches’ legalization statues, which was formed in January 2017 under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister and has a membership of 6 ministers: Defense and Military Production, Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Local Development, Legal Affairs and the House of Representatives, Justice, and Antiquities.


In addition to representatives of the concerned community, the General Intelligence Service, the Administrative Control Authority, and the National Security Sector in the Ministry of Interior.


According to the infographic, the results of the main committee’s work in churches legalization, has resulted in  regularization of 1109 churches and buildings nationwide, distributed as follows: 681 churches and 428 buildings.


The infographic highlighted the geographical distribution of churches and buildings that have been reconciled by the Committee chaired by the Prime Minister, which covers the geographical sectors throughout the Republic until August 2019.


This distribution was as follows: Minya (189) Church and Building, Giza (121) Church & Building, Qalyubia (110) Church & Building, Alexandria (87) Church & Building, Beheira (74) Church & Building, Sohag (87) Church & Building, Assiut (71) Church & Building.


Sharkia (66) Church & Building, Cairo (51) church and building, Gharbia (35) church and building, Aswan (38) church and building, Beni Suef (35) church and building, Dakahlia (28) church and building, Luxor (25) church and building, Red Sea (17) church and building, Qena (15) church and building.


Suez (14) churches and buildings, Menoufia (8) churches and buildings, Matrouh (13) churches and buildings, Ismailia (12) churches and buildings, Kafr El-Sheikh (8) churches and buildings, Fayoum (3) churches and buildings, and finally New Valley Governorate (2) church and building.




The infographic showed the Committee's decisions on the  regularization of churches and buildings until August 2019.


The first decision of the Committee was issued in May 2018 after the end of the receipt of applications in September 2017, as follows: 220 churches and buildings legalized in May 2018, 120 churches and One building was legalized in October 2018, 168 churches and buildings were legalized in December 2018.


Also 119 churches and buildings were legalized in January 2019, 156 churches and buildings were legalized in March 2019, 111 churches and buildings were legalized in April 2019, 127 churches and buildings were legalizied in July 2019.


In addition to and 88 churches and buildings were legalized in August 2019, The community is responsible for obtaining permits for demolition, reconstruction or restoration and for providing structural safety.


According to the infographic, the main committee for the legalization of churches examines the applications and verifies the following conditions:

- The application must be submitted by the legal representative of the religious community that owns the church or the building, and the building should be in existence on the date of the implementation of Law No. 80 of 2016, structurally appropriate according to a report from a certified engineer at the Engineers Syndicate. In addition, the building must comply with the rules and regulations of civil protection and the laws regulating state property.

- Finally, regarding the executive position of the churches in the fourth generation cities, Infographic highlighted that the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was opened in the new administrative capital. In addition to the implementation of 6 churches in the city of October Gardens, as well as the implementation of 7 churches in cities (New Mansoura, El Alamein, West Qena, New El Obour, East Port Said, New October, West Assiut).
