The energy sector plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development worldwide, Planning and Economic Development Minister Hala el Saeed said on Saturday.
Saeed made her remarks in a speech delivered on her behalf by Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Kamali during the opening session of the "Intentional Sustainable Development Conference," organized by the Institute of National Planning under the auspices of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker was in attendance.
Highlighting the importance of managing the energy sector effectively, Saeed outlined the major challenges facing the sector in Egypt. She noted that these challenges necessitate reducing the reliance on fossil fuels for energy purposes and embracing clean energy use as an alternative to help attaining the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the goals set out by Egypt's 2030 Vision and Egypt's 2035 Integrated Energy Strategy.
This year's conference comes at a time of extraordinary economic and heath circumstances that affect Egypt and the whole world, the minister said, asserting the uncertainty of the economic situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She added that the impact of the virus-driven economic crisis had been less severe in Egypt compared to other countries, thanks to the economic and social reform programs, the state had embarked since 2016.
Participants in the two-day conference include a great host of researchers, academics, energy and sustainable development experts, along with representatives of regional and international organizations, relevant ministries and NGOs concerned with energy issues.
