Islamic monuments in Alexandria

Alexandria's rich Islamic monuments including:

-Qaitbay Castle

 The founder of Qaitbay Castle was Sultan Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay Al-Mahmudi in the year 882 AH / 1477 AD.

 It has been built in the place of the ancient minaret of Alexandria at the eastern edge of Pharos Island.

 

When Sultan Qaytbay visited Alexandria city in the year 882 AH - 1477 AD, he went to the old site of Al-Manar and ordered that a tower would  be built there on its old foundation. It has been known later as the Qaitbay Castle or Tabia Qaitbay.

The construction has been completed two years after the date of construction.

 

 As Qaitbay Castle in Alexandria is considered one of the most important castles on the Mediterranean coast, the sultans and rulers of Egypt took care of it throughout the historical ages.

 

-Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi mosque

 

Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque is considered one of the most important mosques in Alexandria. He is Sheikh Shehab al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmed bin Hassan bin Ali al-Khazraji al-Ansari al-Mursi that  was born in 616 AH -219 AD. He grew up in a suitable environment that prepared him for Sufism.

 

The mosque overlooks the eastern port in Anfoushi. It is an Andalusia-style building with marble and copper columns and octagonal columns. The most important feature of the mosque is the decoration of the Arab and Andalusia style, and the western dome is topped by the mausoleum of Abu al-Abbas and his two sons.

 

-Al-Busairi Mosque

 Al-Busairi Mosque is accredited to Imam Al-Busairi. He is Sharaf Al-Din Muhammad bin Saeed Al-Busairi. He was  born in the year 608 AH -1213 AH. He was famous for writing Sufi poetry in the love of God and the praise of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.

 

Al-Busairi Mosque is located at the Mosque Square overlooking the eastern port of Alexandria city in an area known as Mosque Square. It is an area famous for the presence of a group of Islamic shrines that include many shrines of the righteous saints of God who came to Alexandria city in  both eras of Ayyubid and Mamluk states.

 

-Prophet Daniel Mosque

 

The mosque is attributed to Sheikh Muhammad Daniel Al-Mawsili. He is one of the sheikhs of the Shafi’i sect. He came to Alexandria city at the end of the eighth century AH.

 

 He took Alexandria city as a place to teach the principles of religion and the science of religious duties according to the Shafi’i approach and remained in Alexandria city until his death in the year 810 AH. He was buried in the mosque. His tomb became a shrine to people. The Prophet Daniel Mosque is located on the street known by his name.
