Egypt submitted to UN realistic and honest report on its human rights situation - minister



Minister of Justice Omar Marwan said Egypt submitted to the United Nations a realistic and honest report on its human rights situation.

Speaking to Sada El Balad TV channel over the phone on Tuesday21/3/2023, he said death sentences passed by judges in Egypt are all in cases connected with serious crimes and come in line with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

With regard to illicit gain and reconciliation cases, the minister said that there is a government committee that is tasked with following up all cases of reconciliation and presenting reports about them to the Cabinet to consider any future legal action related to them on a case-by-case basis.

He applauded the recent reforms in the prison system and the new approach adopted by the Interior Ministry as regards punitive and correctional facilities and improving the condition of prisoners in line with international standards and the National Human Rights Strategy.

He pointed out that now there is a new philosophy in dealing with inmates which aims to reduce crime and encourage prison-based rehabilitation programs to foster prisoners' social reintegration.

The minister spoke about the proposed Personal Status Law, noting that its procedural provisions have already been drafted, and promised that the law will be balanced and preserve the rights of women, men and children.

The aim of the law is to reduce divorce rates to safeguard the Egyptian family and the Egyptian society, he said.
