2023: Year of Egypt's achievements in health sector

The health sector in Egypt has witnessed a remarkable development this year, both in terms of the volume of investments made by the state or the initiatives that have been launched, and the state has succeeded in establishing and developing many hospitals in various governorates of the Republic, which improve the health of the Egyptian citizen.
During the first quarter of 2023, the Ministry of Health announced the provision of services to 11 million and 500 thousand beneficiaries, under the slogan "100 million health" during the first quarter of 2023.
The performance rate of health initiatives in the first quarter of this year increased by 53%, compared to the first quarter of 2022.
The initiatives include the areas of early detection and treatment of hearing impairment and loss, prevention of waiting lists in surgeries, early detection of virus C, maternal and fetal health care, early detection of anemia, obesity, and stunting, early detection of genetic diseases of newborns in nurseries, support for women's health, screening for those about to get married, screening and treatment of chronic diseases, and early detection of liver cancer.
Treatment file at the expense of the state during the current year: The Ministry of Health and Population has taken measures to facilitate and speed up the extraction of treatment decisions at the expense of the state, for citizens who are not subject to the umbrella of the health insurance system, in implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and the instructions aimed to direct those in charge of working in medical facilities and service providers, to inquire about the position of treatment seekers at the expense of the state «uninsured» through integrated digital systems in various databases.
Emphasis was placed on directing hospitals providing treatment services at the expense of the state, to activate databases to complete the procedures for issuing the decisions of the mechanized tripartite committees and submit them to the national network for treatment at the expense of the state, to issue treatment decisions, without the need to bring any document showing the position of the applicant's use of health insurance.
All health offices in the 27 governorates, with a total of 4,667 offices, have been automated to obtain birth certificates, deaths, burial permits, and other documentary transactions.
In the vaccine production file, Minister of Health, and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stressed that Egypt has become one of the main producers of vaccines in the region, through cooperation with Chinese partners.
The ministry has worked to raise the production capacity of the Egyptian National Company for Vaccine Manufacturing (Vaxera) to meet the local demand for the vaccine, and to work tirelessly to make Egypt a center for vaccine production in the region.
The Ministry of Health and Population announced the inventory and numbering of families in the geographical scope, for health units and medical centers, to start opening a medical file for each family, including the medical history, and the details of the clinical examination of family members, based on the directives of Minister Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, as he counted 251 health facilities nationwide, with a health facility for each health department at the level of 21 governorates, within the first phase of the initiative, pointing out that families benefiting from the services of these facilities are being counted and numbered to create a file Family for every family.
The initiative is being expanded to reach a total of 1,004 health facilities, serving 14 million families, adding that 500 health facilities are being automated as part of the "Decent Life" initiative, which is a continuation of the first phase of the initiative to develop primary care units.
The Ministry of Health and Population announced the inclusion of oncology drugs and modern biological drugs in the treatment system at the expense of the state, in implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, to lift the burden on citizens, especially those who are unable to do so.
The Minister of Health and Population directed the holding of periodic meetings of the Supreme Committees for the Treatment of Oncology, Presidential Initiatives and Hematology, to update treatment protocols at the expense of the state, which aims to improve the rate of response and recovery, reduce the chances of tumor relapse, and improve the quality of life of the Egyptian patient.
Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar inaugurated the first integrated laboratory for pathological and genetic analysis in Egypt, and the minister said that the integrated genetic and pathology analyzes (CGP) were only available in the private sector by sending samples abroad, explaining that the second phase of the project includes obtaining the international accreditation CAP for the laboratory, which is the international certificate that guarantees the quality of laboratory procedures, the operational capacity of the laboratory will be able to conduct about 1800 CGP genetic analyzes.Annually, 400,000 cancer pathology samples are examined – subject to scalability – which helps doctors accurately determine the appropriate treatment, for each individual case, which is reflected in raising cure rates.
Egypt has made many achievements in the fight against meningitis according to an effective strategy to immunize the community from communicable and infectious diseases, the efforts to combat meningitis, and to ensure a more effective response through updating the guidelines and surveillance strategy, came by including the vaccine (Hemophilus influenza type B) within the pentagram vaccine at the age of (2-4-6) months, and maintaining the coverage rate not less than 95%, while taking preventive measures against any case monitored, Egypt is one of the countries that have been able to control the disease since 1989, pointing out that the disease surveillance plan includes 12 fever hospitals, through which the disease is monitored and samples are analyzed by PCR.
So far, 54 million and 806 thousand and 4 medical services have been provided through the "100 Days of Health" campaign since its launch on June 25, 2023, in all governorates of the Republic, following the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to extend the work of the campaign.
Since its inception, the "100 Days of Health" campaign has provided about one million and 509 thousand and 232 services, as part of the President's initiative to support women's health - in the first visit - while the occasional and repeated visits amounted to 4 million and 317 thousand and 913 visits.
This year witnessed a very important event, which is the elimination of the "C" virus, as the World Health Organization handed Egypt a certificate free of the C virus, as the first country in the world to eliminate and defeat the C virus, and receive the "Golden Tier" award from the organization, this comes at a time when "Virus C" infects 360 million people globally, and leads to the death of 3,000 people every day, this historic achievement was achieved thanks to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's initiative, to eliminate the C virus, which Described as "the first of its kind in the world," Egypt was moved from a "red spot," according to the map of global hepatitis virus infection rates, because it solves the highest infection rates, to a Hepatitis C free Egypt by 2023.
The Director of Technical Programs at the World Health Organization - Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Rana Hajji, considered that Egypt is "a role model under the auspices of the political leadership", as it sought during 10 years of governance to provide a decent life for all Egyptians at all levels, especially the "100 Million Health" initiative, one of the most important major achievements in the health system, as it succeeded in changing the form and content of the system in Egypt and was met with international praise.
Egypt hosted the World Conference on Population, Health and Development under the patronage and presence of President Sisi, and this conference served as a global dialogue platform for experts, policy makers, researchers and practitioners, in an effort to exchange experiences and best practices and discuss the changing and interrelated relationships between health, population and development, the conference came within the framework of the Egyptian state's interest in the population and development file, and issued recommendations and decisions aimed at improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen through attention to health and social care.
