Electricity Ministry to open 252 MW Gulf of Suez wind power plant

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker will attend on Tuesday the inauguration of the 252 MW Gulf of Suez wind power plant project in in Red Sea governorate, under the auspices of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli. 

The inauguration of the wind farm will be attended by German Ambassador Frank Hartmann, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt Christian Berger, French Ambassador to Egypt Eric Chevalier and Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) Mohamed el Khayat. 

The wind power plant consists of 70 wind turbines, with a capacity of 3.6 MW each. The project is expected to generate 1,200 gigawatts of power annually.

The wind farm saves up to 203,000 tons of fuel on annual basis.

The project is envisaged to offset more than 469,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) a year.

The project is financed by KfW Development Bank, in cooperation with the European Union (EU), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD). 

The wind power plant entered into commercial operation in October 2023.

The mega projects falls within the framework of state's strategy to level up the share of the renewable power in the energy mix to more than 42 percent by the year 2030.
