Sunday، 08 December 2024 - 02:38 PM

During his participation in the Special Ministerial Meeting on the Situation in Syria in Doha, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of addressing the rapid developments in Syria to preserve a unified Syria from collapse and disintegration.

Abdelatty added that reaching a ceasefire is crucial to create a climate that allows for the launch of a political process in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254. He also stressed the importance of preventing sectarianism as it represents an entry point for more instability in the region.

The ministerial meeting was held in the presence of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Astana Group, represented by the Turkish foreign minister, the Iranian foreign minister and the Russian special envoy for Syria.

The ministerial meeting discussed the accelerating developments in Syria, and ways to find a political solution to the crisis based on Security Council Resolution 2254 to prevent Syria from slipping into further chaos.

The Egyptian minister of foreign affairs further highlighted the significance of preventing the spread of terrorism in Syria, and addressing the issue of the displaced people and refugees, ensuring their voluntary and safe return to Syria.

At the end of the meeting, the participating foreign ministers agreed to continue consultations and discussions to achieve a political solution in Syria, stop the war, and launch a political process that leads to preserving the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Syria.

Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy to Syria, joined the meeting, where he presented his vision of the situation and possible ways to deal with the crisis from the point of view of the United Nations in cooperation with the countries participating in the meeting.

The foreign ministers agreed with the proposal presented by the UN special envoy, and agreed to issue the attached statement as an outcome of the meeting.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Abdelatty held a series of individual meetings with the prime minister and minister of foreign affairs of Qatar, and the foreign ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Iran, in addition to the UN special envoy for Syria, where they discussed the ongoing regional developments, most notably the situation in Syria and efforts to end the crisis.
