Saturday، 25 January 2025 - 11:29 AM

Despite complicated economic challenges, geopolitical pressures, regional conflicts and wars, Egypt has made remarkable progress in infrastructure development, including transportation, energy, urban development, as well as economic and administrative reform, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy said.

Egypt has also managed to expand social safety nets, improve access to healthcare, develop education systems and enhance social inclusion, while addressing inequalities and ensuring that the benefits of development are shared equitably among all segments of society, Morsy added in her opening remarks at a side event held Friday 24/1/2025 on the margins of the UN Human Rights Council's 4th Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Egypt, which runs from January 24-28.

According to the Egyptian Constitution, “Society is based on social solidarity. The State shall achieve social justice and provide the means to achieve social interdependence, in order to ensure a decent life for all citizens, as regulated by law," Morsy said during the side event, which was titled: "Social and economic progress in Egypt."

The state is pursuing a set of family-oriented policies to promote sustainable development, added Morsy, who is leading the Egyptian delegation to the event, according to a press statement by the Social Solidarity Ministry.

Morsy said Egypt's socio-economic rights framework guarantees the right to work, social security, education, healthcare, and housing.

She noted that Egypt's strategic framework is consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embedded into Egypt Vision 2030, the Population Strategy, the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women, and the National Human Rights Strategy.

Citing the recent approval of a new social security law by the Egyptian parliament, the minister said this step constitutes a significant progress in the national social protection system, given the new law's focus on securing a more comprehensive and sustainable social safety net and turning social assistance into a social right.

Egypt is one of 14 States under review by the UPR Working Group during its current session. The first, second and third UPR reviews of Egypt took place in February 2010, November 2014, and November 2019, respectively.
