Egypt joined the international community on May 22, 2025, in celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity, with activities held through the Ministry of Environment’s social media platforms under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity for both the environment and human well-being, and to encourage public participation in protecting natural resources.

Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad emphasized that this year’s occasion offers a valuable opportunity to reinforce the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and related agreements. She stressed the need to link biodiversity with social and economic aspects and called on nations to develop biodiversity strategies aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework and national sustainable development goals.

Dr. Fouad also highlighted the importance of integrating biodiversity efforts with climate action and land degradation initiatives under a unified global vision. She encouraged innovation from the private sector, civil society, academia, and media to help protect biodiversity and promote sustainable livelihoods.

The Minister noted Egypt’s leadership role in global environmental efforts, through hosting COP14 on biodiversity and COP27 on climate change, and its ongoing work on initiatives like the Nature-based Solutions partnership with Germany and IUCN. Nationally, Egypt has developed a biodiversity strategy, a climate strategy for 2050, and a biodiversity finance plan, while involving local communities in the management of 13 protected areas to create job opportunities and preserve traditional cultures.

Dr. Fouad concluded by urging international cooperation and integrated environmental action to meet the goals of the 2030 biodiversity framework, calling for the active participation of youth and women in facing global environmental challenges.
