In a significant move toward localizing strategic industries, Vice Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, held an extensive meeting with representatives from German companies SAMCO and Maurer on Saturday, June 8, 2025. The meeting aimed to establish a roadmap for creating an integrated industrial complex in Egypt dedicated to manufacturing all components needed for bridges and tunnels.
The project aligns with Egypt’s national strategy to localize key industries and transform the country into a regional industrial hub, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives.
Also present were Dr. Nahed Youssef, Chairperson of the Industrial Development Authority, along with senior officials from the ministries of industry and transport.
During the meeting, the parties reviewed current collaborative projects between Maurer and Egypt’s SAMCO. These projects already involve the domestic manufacture of advanced bridge bearings to global quality standards. Discussions also included plans to expand production capacity, especially considering Egypt's ongoing infrastructure megaprojects, such as the high-speed electric rail, major bridges, and massive tunnels.
The companies reaffirmed their commitment to training Egyptian engineers and workers in the latest manufacturing technologies. Currently, locally produced bridge bearings contain 75% domestic content — a figure that is expected to increase as full manufacturing processes are localized in Egypt. The new industrial complex will also produce related items such as bridge expansion joints, aiming to meet domestic demand and open export channels to Africa and the Middle East while transferring advanced expertise and technologies to Egypt.
Minister El-Wazir directed the formation of a technical committee composed of representatives from the Industrial Development Authority, the General Authority for Roads and Bridges, and SAMCO. This committee will draft a detailed roadmap including construction and operation timelines, as well as training requirements to prepare qualified human resources.
The minister emphasized that the project reflects the Egyptian government's strong commitment to localizing vital industries and empowering the private sector in both industry and transport.
Representatives from Maurer expressed pride in working in the Egyptian market and praised the country’s improved infrastructure and investor-friendly climate. They lauded Egypt’s success in streamlining procedures and offering attractive incentives, making it a prime destination for foreign investment. They also commended the skill and adaptability of Egyptian engineers and workers, who have proven capable of implementing cutting-edge manufacturing techniques.
