Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgiy Borisenko on Saturday 14/6/2025 emphasized Russia's commitment to strengthening ties with Egypt and implementing several development projects.
Borisenko, in exclusive statements to MENA, described as "fruitful and beneficial" the discussions between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which took place on the sidelines of President Sisi's visit to Moscow in May to attend the World War II Victory celebrations.
“The talks tackled economic cooperation, including the Russian Industrial Zone in Egypt, as well as developments in the Middle East,” the Russian ambassador said.
He underscored Russia's appreciation of Egypt's diligent efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
“Russia is looking forward to Egypt's participation in the upcoming Russian-Arab Summit slated for October, in addition to continuous political consultations and exchange of delegation visits,” Borisenko said.
He added that this summit will be an opportunity to bolster cooperation between Russia and Arab states, in light of the deep historical ties connecting both sides.
As regards economic cooperation with Egypt, Borisenko said that during a recent visit by Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Khatib to Moscow in May, he discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields with his Russian counterpart during meetings of the joint higher committee.
Concerning the Russian Industrial Zone, the Russian Ambassador to Egypt said that technical agreements necessary for the project's implementation were signed in Moscow.
It has agreed to begin establishing some facilities throughout 2025, the ambassador said, noting that total Russian investments in the zone are expected to reach $7 billion.
Regarding Egyptian-Russian trade, Borisenko said that bilateral trade is developing rapidly and reached a record level last year, exceeding $9 billion.
“The first quarter of 2025 has witnessed a further increase, with Egyptian exports to Russia reaching nearly $1 billion,” Borisenko added.
“Egypt had imported over 10 million tons of wheat from Russia in 2024, a record figure in the history of trade between the two countries,” the Russian envoy said.
He pointed out that 10 million tons of wheat covered more than 80 percent of Egypt's needs, emphasizing that Moscow is a stable supplier of wheat to the Egyptian market.
As for tourism, Borisenko said that about 1.6 million Russian tourists spend their vacations in Egypt each year, noting that between 18 to 20 flights operate daily between Egypt and Russian cities.
Regarding the war in Gaza, Borisenko affirmed Russia's total rejection of all attempts to resettle Gaza residents.
He underlined Moscow's strong support for the efforts exerted by Egypt and mediators to halt the war.
The Russian ambassador in Cairo called on Israel to immediately cease military operations in the Gaza Strip.
