Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Sherif el-Sherbiny on Thursday 19/6/2025 issued directives for officials in new cities to reduce energy and water consumption, in light of current developments and repercussions of the ongoing Iranian-Israeli military conflict.
Sherbiny made the remarks during the regular meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee that was attended by ministry officials, officials of the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and officials of new city authorities.
During the meeting, Sherbiny underscored that resource rationalization has become a national necessity.
The minister instructed heads of new city authorities to implement immediate measures to reduce energy and water consumption, including undergoing maintenance on public lighting systems and streetlights, along with launching awareness campaigns through media and the ministry’s social media channels to encourage citizens to conserve resources.
The rationalization directive also includes regulating advertising displays, especially illuminated billboards, to reduce energy use, as well as requiring the submission of daily progress reports from each city on energy and water-saving efforts for continuous monitoring.
Meanwhile, Sherbiny highlighted progress achieved in reducing water losses, adding that further efforts are needed.
He stressed the importance of monitoring consumption and ensuring proper operation and maintenance of the drinking water treatment plant.
