Political relations

Egypt and Argentina have diplomatic relations for more than 60 years that began in 1947, and the level of diplomatic representation was raised to the rank of ambassador in 1953, and these historical relations represent an important base in raising the level of economic relations and opening new horizons and areas of cooperation between the business community in the two countries, especially since both Egypt and Argentina occupy a distinguished regional and international position, as well as possess diverse economic capabilities and energies and tend to increase development rates and expand the participation of the private sector in development Economic. The foreign ministers of the two countries are keen to meet regularly, whether in a bilateral framework or on the sidelines of the international meetings and events in which they participate.

On 2/3/2023, Sameh Shoukry met with Foreign Minister Santiago Cavero, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, on the sidelines of the meetings of the Foreign Ministers of the Group of Twenty in India. The two ministers discussed a number of priorities that are the subject of joint coordination between the two countries, including working hard to ensure that food supplies between the regions of the world are not interrupted, and advancing fair sustainable development efforts for all countries of the world.

On 11/9/2022, Ambassador Mohamed Kazem, Ambassador of Egypt to Argentina, handed over to Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero the invitation extended by the President of the Republic to Argentine President Alberto Fernandez to participate in the World Leaders Summit, the two sides discussed ways to deepen the excellent political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries, as well as how to raise bilateral cooperation to broader horizons.  

On 30/3/2022, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for International Economic Relations of Argentina, Cecilia Todesca-Bocco, received Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Kazem, Ambassador of Egypt to Argentina, the meeting discussed aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to develop them during the coming period, including the possibility of convening the Egyptian-Argentine Joint Committee. They also discussed a number of issues of common concern, as well as the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian economic and trade crisis, and ways of cooperation between the two sides to achieve their common interests.

On 27/11/2020, Ambassador Amin Malika, Ambassador of Egypt to Argentina, accompanied by the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the Argentine Republic, participated in the condolence ceremony of the football player "Diego Armando Maradona".

On 25/5/2020, President El-Sisi sent a cable of congratulations to President Alberto Fernandez, President of the Republic of Argentina, on the occasion of the celebration of Revolution Day.

On 13/7/2017, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi  received Gabriela Michetti, Vice President of the Argentine Republic, who is on an official visit to Egypt, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of diplomatic relations between the two countries, they discussedhow to enhance cooperation with Argentina in Africa within the framework of trilateral cooperation in view of the two countries' assets in this context. The two sides also discussed ways to develop cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and extremist ideology, taking into account what terrorism has become A threat to the entire world.

On 13/7/2017, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received Gabriela Mikite, Vice President of the Argentine Republic, the meeting dealt with ways to upgrade and develop relations between the two countries at various levels, as well as coordination and consultation between the two countries within the framework of international forums and organizations in light of the challenges facing the world, especially terrorism and the maintenance of peace and security.

On 13/7/2017, Dr. Ali Abdel Aal met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Gabriela Mikitti, Vice President of the Argentine Republic, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed during the meeting the importance of intensifying cooperation with the Argentine Republic, to confront terrorism in light of the universality of this phenomenon, stressing that there is no way to curb this phenomenon except through intensive cooperation to dry up the sources of terrorism .

On 14/9/2014, Foreign Minister Sameh  Shoukry met with his Argentine counterpart Hector Timmerman,  Shoukry stressed that Egypt  enjoys strong relations with Argentina, where diplomatic relations have been established since the mid-forties of the last century, and there is coordination between the two countries in international forums. Shoukry explained that Argentina plays an important role in Latin America, and Egypt plays an important role regionally and internationally, hence the importance of coordination between the two  sides, which also comes within the framework of their membership in a number of organizations.

On 13/9/2014, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Hector Timmermann, Minister of Foreign Affairs of  Argentina, Timmerman praised the Egyptian efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and the adoption of a truce, noting the importance of resuming negotiations between the two sides to achieve a final settlement, stressing his country's condemnation of all forms of terrorism, and noting Egypt's pivotal role in combating terrorism, not only as a pivotal country in the Middle East, but also a country whose political and cultural influence extends beyond its regional surroundings.

Economic relations

Argentina is Egypt's second trading partner in South America after Brazil, and the volume of trade exchange between the two countries is expected to exceed $ 2 billion.

Imports from Argentina amounted to $ 864.5 million during the first seven months of 2021 compared to $ 813.3 million during the corresponding months of 2020, an increase of $ 51.2 million.

On 17/8/2021, the Director General of Bilateral Agreements at the Ministry of Trade and Industry Michael Gamal said that since the entry into force of the trade exchange agreement between Egypt and Merkesur in 2017, the volume of Egyptian exports has doubled, rising from $ 113.1 million in 2016 to $ 395.8 million in 2020, and the volume of Egyptian imports has decreased from $ 4 billion in 2016 to $ 3 billion in 2020, adding that the exchanged goods were divided into five lists, the first list, which includes immediate exemption As soon as the agreement entered into force, it includes (agricultural crops - food industries - medicinal plants - engineering goods), and pointed out that the second list includes gradual reduction over 4 years, while the third list includes gradual reduction over 8 years, while the fourth list includes gradual reduction over 10 years, and the fifth list includes a very limited list of sensitive goods, and noted that the first and second lists are exempt from customs and include about 3200 customs items, and on September 2, the percentage of customs reduction in the third list From 50% to 62%, it will increase in the fourth list from 40% to 50%, and all lists will be duty-free in 2026.

On 5/12/2020, Dr. Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance, received Eduardo Antonio Varela, the Argentine Ambassador to Egypt, Maait reviewed the successful Egyptian experience in economic reform, which received strong support from the political leadership and the people, and gave the national economy a degree of solidity in facing internal and external challenges, absorbing the Corona crisis, and mitigating its severity, expressing the Egyptian government's aspiration to enhance cooperation with Argentina in various fields, the Argentine ambassador praised the Egyptian government's success in dealing positively with the Corona crisis, which indicates the importance of Egypt has achieved economic gains, expressing his country's aspiration to enhance cooperation with the Egyptian side, in various fields.

On 23/3/2019, Dr. Sahar Nasr, Egyptian Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, met with Ambassador Jorge Fauri, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, the two   parties agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the economic fields, increase mutual investments and joint projects, and benefit from the free trade agreement between Cairo and the Mercosur countries in increasing trade exchange.  The two sides discussed enhancing cooperation in the field of agriculture and livestock, in addition to cooperation with Argentina in Africa.

On 2/10/2018, Eduardo Varela, the Argentine ambassador in Cairo, said that there are good indicators to deepen relations between the two countries during the coming period, especially since relations are excellent in the political field, and the economic field, there are intensive economic relations during the current period, and will increase more with the entry into force of the Mercosur Agreement, and also, investment opportunities will increase during the coming period.

On 17/7/2017, Eng. Sherif Ismail, Prime Minister and Vice President of the Argentine Republic, Gabriela Mikite, and her accompanying delegation held a session of talks attended by the Ministers of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Dr. Abdel Moneim Al-Banna, Supply and Internal Trade, Dr. Ali Moslehi, and Immigration and Egyptians Abroad, Nabila Makram, to discuss ways to develop bilateral cooperation in all fields, especially the areas of economic cooperation and the activation of trade exchange.

On 13/7/2017, Argentine Vice President Marta Gabriela Michi participated in the activities of the Egyptian-Argentine Business Forum, which was held in the presence of the Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Kabil and a large number of  officials and businessmen in both countries, Kabil announced that preparations are  underway to send an Egyptian delegation that includes officials from the government sector and businessmen to the four Mercosur countries, namely Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, in the near future to review the available capabilities and opportunities for joint cooperation between the two sides.

Cultural Relations

The Egyptian Center for Agriculture offers five annual scholarships to Argentina, and the Ministry of Education and Al-Azhar offer two scholarships annually for learning Arabic and Islamic studies.

There is an envoy of Al-Azhar in Buenos Aires who is the imam of the Islamic Center, and the Ministry of Awqaf sends him as an imam to work at the Islamic Center in the city of Mendoza, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the National Library in Buenos Aires signed a cooperation agreement between them.

On 2/12/2022, the Egyptian Embassy in Buenos Aires hostedan event organized in cooperation with the "Forum for People of Determination" in Argentina, represented in a musical theatrical performance presented by a group of children and youth of determination, with the participation of the Argentine artist Nacha Guevara, one of the most important and famous singers in Latin America.

On 25/9/2022, within the framework of Egypt and Argentina's celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them, the Embassy of Egypt in Argentina hosted a photographic exhibition that included a collection of 40 photographs taken in Egypt and Argentina between the twenties and seventies of the last century, which belong to the collection of works and holdings of the late Egyptian-Argentine photographer and artist Samir Makarios. The event was well received and the works on display were well received by the attendees.

Tourism Cooperation

In October 2016, Egypt participated in the annual International Tourism Fair held in Buenos Aires.

At the end of October 2016, the Argentine Minister of Tourism participated in the meeting of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization held in Luxor.

On 1/9/2022, Ambassador Mohamed Kazem, Ambassador of Egypt to Argentina, received Daniela Vilar,  Minister of Environment of the Government of Buenos Aires, the largest Argentine state, with the aim of exchanging visions and ideas on the climate action agenda.
