A civilizational and cultural leap for Egypt with the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest cultural event in the world’
‘Egypt presents to the world the Grand Egyptian Museum, which will be one of the largest and richest museums in the world’
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi
A new spot of light that the world is waiting for to illuminate the skies of the world from the same place that has always extended its light to humanity - on the land of ‘Minaf’ - Egypt's first capital five thousand years ago, in front of the pyramid of King Khufu, the only remaining wonder of the ancient world.
The descendants of the Pharaohs are digging a new history for their civilization... Egyptians are racing against time... to build the greatest cultural edifice in the twenty-first century... and the largest museum in human history... embracing the heritage and treasures of our ancestors... so that the journey of glory, eternity and eternity remains narrated... and confirms to the world that Egypt is not just a historical country... but rather Egypt came and then came history.
The Grand Egyptian Museum. A dream whose features were formed in the mind of an artist with renewed creativity and giving... And a minister haunted by the love of the homeland.
It became a great edifice that stands up to history. With the will of a father and a stubborn fighter president who drew over his forehead a majestic homeland, and a bold architectural thought from the loyal guards of the homeland who fought the battle of construction and development.
They continued night and day... They defied all odds to accomplish this huge project, transforming this unique spot into a ‘golden triangle’ that is unrivalled in the whole world, to become the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids Plateau, the largest museum in the history of mankind. And the Egyptian people's gift to history.
The Importance of the Museum and Its objectives:
The museum was designed to support the preservation and restoration of cultural and historical heritage, and to enhance activities related to the museum field, such as displaying artifacts and educational activities, in a way that contributes to the development of the tourism industry, as the museum derives its importance from the importance and history of the pyramids area in which it is located, as the site gives tourism companies the opportunity to diversify tourism programs and combine different types of tourism.
It is expected that the process of establishing new hotels close to the museum and the pyramids will be active, and the market for luxury real estate with archaeological and historical views, suitable for tourist housing or ownership and rent in the region, will grow.
News about the Grand Museum, even before its opening, is an attraction for Egyptian tourism, and campaigns to stimulate tourism are based on highlighting its importance.
In order to achieve its objectives, the museum specializes in the following:
- Displaying archaeological collections and using the latest methods and techniques of museum display.
- Digitally documenting and recording archaeological objects, as well as preserving, securing, securing, studying, maintaining and restoring them.
- Organizing temporary and permanent archaeological exhibitions inside Egypt.
- Holding seminars, conferences, cultural and scientific activities and other activities.
- Educating young people and Egyptian society about Egyptian civilization.
- Reviving Egyptian traditional crafts and arts, through the manufacture, marketing and sale of archaeological reproductions.
The Museum's Logo
The museum’s logo design was chosen by an Egyptian jury, and the honor was won by Tariq Al-Atrisi, the Lebanese-Dutch designer. The museum’s logo was revealed during the promotional campaign on June 10, 2018.
The Meaning behind Logo Colors
The logo represents the horizontal layout of the museum, whose sides open to overlook the Pyramids of Giza.
The logo takes on the orange color, which reflects the color that the sun gives to the Pyramids Plateau at sunset.
As for the writing of the name of the museum in a flowing Arabic script, it was inspired by the dunes and sand hills of the surrounding environment.
Design of the Museum
The architectural design of this great cultural edifice is distinguished by the fact that it brings together imagination, thought and creativity.
The Egyptian state had announced an international architectural competition for the best design for the museum, under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Architects.
The current design, submitted by Architects Peng Heneghan in Ireland, won, and relied on the sun's rays extending from the tops of the three pyramids when they meet to represent a conical mass that is the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the museum itself appears from a vertical perspective in the form of a fourth pyramid of the Giza Trigram.
This architectural masterpiece that dazzles visitors during the day, becomes even more charming and attractive at night, as it is decorated with dim lights, adding a wonderful artistic touch to it.
Location:
The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on 117 acres a few miles west of Cairo (15 kilometres) on the plateau between the pyramids (only 2 kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza) and New Cairo, making it a gateway to Egypt's past, present and future.
The unique location gives visitors the opportunity to view the three pyramids of Giza through the dazzling glass façade in the entrance lobby of the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the facade of the museum rises five floors to match the height of the pyramid, and tourists can take pictures with the pyramids while enjoying King Tutankhamen’s artifacts.
Linking networks will be implemented between the areas of the museum and each other through a ‘cable car’, along 10 stations to be moved through, as well as metro access to it, in addition to the presence of an airport close to the Grand Museum and the pyramids area, which is Sphinx Airport, 6 to 7 kilometres away and is expected to attract 5 million visitors annually.
The design and implementation of the museum came scientifically and methodologically accurate and well-studied to embrace rare archaeological treasures, rare scientific documents and specialized quality museums, 100 thousand archaeological pieces from different eras where history began with kings who taught the world, presented using the latest technical methods of museum display, virtual reality technology, so that visitors enjoy living the facts and atmosphere by linking the antiquities to the places where they were found, and linking the museum to the pyramids.
The Idea of Establishing the Museum:
In the place where the Great Pyramid, the greatest wonder of the world, stands tall, it is guarded by the Sphinx, a symbol of power in Egypt’s most brilliant era.
With the arms of the authentic Egyptian and its enlightened thought, Egypt overlooks the most important edifice of the world in the contemporary modern era, with a civilizational building that indicates its greatness and its insistence onbeing a beacon that discovers, revives, and presents heritage and civilization to the entire world.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest global civilizational and cultural project currently being implemented. It was designed to serve as a portal through time for the intersection of 5,000-year-old civilization with modern civilization.
The idea of the Grand Museum was launched by artist Minister Farouk Hosni in the nineties of the last century.
This unique idea in itself was not just an idea for a museum building, but rather an open-air museum that includes the pyramids, the Sphinx, temples and tombs, then the closed Grand Egyptian Museum building, which contains within its sides the treasures of ancient Egyptian history, so that this unique spot becomes the largest museum in the history of humanity... and represents the tourist capital of Egypt.
Adding the Pyramids Plateau, which has an area of 3,500 acres, and the land of the Armed Forces Shooting Club, which has an area of 180 acres, (after removing the facilities on it) to the museum space, and connecting them all in the form of a “golden cone”, so that the total final area is about 3,750 acres, constituting the total area of the museum.
Take advantage of the distance between the museum and the Pyramids Plateau, which is crossed by Fayyoum Road, which was developed to have 9 lanes in each direction, and covered with 12 km long connecting pedestrian walkways. To become the largest tourist walkway in the world, tourists can move over it in complete safety, to reach the pyramids plateau.
The tourist travels over it in complete safety, arriving at the Pyramids Plateau, returning to spend time inside the museum, and departing from his nearby hotel residence to visit Fatimid Cairo and all the other museums and archaeological areas, thus extending the tourist’s stay in Cairo for more than 7 days.
This is the state’s vision that complements the idea of the political officials who made the decision in 1998, then President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi came to add a greater dimension to the idea in 2016, and make the project larger. A museum in the history of humanity.

The role of the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) in the construction of the museum:
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is one of the most important areas of bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Japan.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided financial support to help establish the museum through two Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans totaling about US$800 million, as well as technical cooperation to support the GEM's Conservation Centre for the conservation, restoration, packaging and transportation of archaeological objects, and the transfer of expertise in museum and exhibition management and operation to support preparations for the opening of the museum, and the excavation and restoration of Cheops II, known as the Second Sun Chariot, in the Al-Ahram area.
Financial Support:
JICA is providing financial support for the project through two ODA loans, the first in 2008 and the second in 2016, totaling JPY 84.2 billion (approximately USD 800 million), to finance the construction of the museum building, including exhibits, information and communication technology infrastructure, and consultancy services, including construction supervision and procurement.
Technical cooperation:
1. Technical cooperation for the Museum's Conservation Centre
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is expected to include about 50,000 artefacts for display, in addition to the artefacts that will be kept in storage for the purpose of study and scientific research, and a number of artefacts are being transferred in stages from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to the GEM Conservation Centre, which was established in June 2010.
The main objective of the establishment of the Conservation Centre is to launch an international centre for advanced theoretical and practical research in Egyptology and archaeology. The Conservation Centre plays a major role in preserving and restoring the antiquities in the Centre that have been collected and transported from different parts of the country to be displayed in the museum when it opens, in addition to developing the human resources working in the conservation sector in Egypt in the hope of expanding to the Middle East and North Africa.
-First Phase: (June 2008 - June 2011)
‘Preparation Phase’
The preparation phase focused on:
- Supporting the development of the archaeological database
JICA, through Japanese experts, formed and prepared an Egyptian team to take over the archaeological database. This team contributed to the development of the appropriate system and procedures for preparing the database by restructuring and developing the previous database to include more accurate and detailed information about archaeological objects, and JICA experts developed the human and institutional resources capabilities of Egyptian staff in the field of archaeological conservation at the Conservation Centre, which in turn contributed to achieving a more efficient and effective level of work
- Raising the efficiency of the capabilities of workers in the field of restoration
JICA organized several training workshops on methods and techniques of restoration and preservation of antiquities in Egypt and Japan, in cooperation with the National Research Institute for Cultural Heritage in Tokyo.
Second Phase: (July 2011 - March 2016)
‘Training Phase’
In the second phase of the project, which began in July 2011, JICA delegated Japanese experts to conduct more comprehensive and specialized training programs for Egyptians working in the restoration center, with the aim of enhancing expertise and skills in the field of restoration and preservation of antiquities.
This is with the aim of enhancing expertise and skills in the field of restoration and preservation of antiquities, and for the restoration center at the Grand Egyptian Museum to be a leading center in accordance with international standards for practical expertise and research on antiquities preservation in the region, as JICA organized more than 100 training programs in the field of preservation and restoration of antiquities for about 2,250 participants over the course of the project.
Third phase: (November 2016 – till now) “Joint Egyptian-Japanese restoration phase”
The level of cooperation between JICA and the Grand Egyptian Museum was developed and enhanced through the launch of the joint Egyptian-Japanese restoration project, where Egyptian and Japanese experts work together to preserve, restore, package and transport 72 artifacts to be displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum when it opens.
The artifacts include antiquities of various types, such as wood, textiles, wall paintings, and stones, including the golden bed and war chariots of King
Tutankhamun, in addition to his personal possessions such as jackets, gloves, socks, and clothes
II-Capacity development project in the field of museum management and display for the Grand Egyptian Museum (April 2016 –till now)
JICA supports the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and the Grand Egyptian Museum to develop a system for managing and operating the museum in a sustainable manner by developing the capabilities of museum management staff. The project includes capacity development in the areas of management, museum display, information and communications technology, in addition to educational programs for visitors and transportation of artifacts
III- Excavation and Restoration of King Khufu II's Sun Boat (December 2013-present)
JICA is supporting the excavation, restoration and photometric measurement of the Khufu II boat, it has been known as the Second Solar Boat, in the Pyramids area in cooperation with the Tokyo Solar Boat Institute, which is expected to become one of the museum’s exhibits and a major attraction for visitors.
The boat was discovered in 1987 by a Japanese archaeological team led by Professor Sakuji Yoshimura. Currently, work is underway to extract and restore the second boat of King Khufu to be displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum in the future.
